Veteran’s Expeditions is an outdoor adventure group led by veterans serving veterans who get after it in big ways. Their purpose is to help veterans in mind, body and purpose by teaching outdoors skills and facilitating outdoor ventures for fellow veterans. These outings range from ice climbing, snowshoeing, mountaineering, mountain biking, skiing, summiting big mountains and much more. If your love language is the outdoors and you’re a veteran, this amazing group of people is likely what you’ve been looking for.
In January of 2017, I went on my first trip with Veteran’s Expeditions. I had signed up for the Ouray ice-climbing trip with 27 other Veterans. I transitioned out of the military 2 years prior and have had a hard time finding friends that shared the same affinity for the outdoors that I have. The Ouray trip turned out to be one of the most memorable and incredible experiences that I’ve had. I was nervous about not knowing anyone and worried about whether or not I could climb an ice wall. My plan was to give it my best – and if it didn’t work out, I’d sneak off to go ski a local resort by myself. By the end, I didn’t want the weekend to end, and I left with many new friends.
When I showed up, all of us gathered in a room for a briefing on the weekend. Nick, the founder of VetEx, welcomed everyone and opened up about his passion for the outdoors and serving veterans. Despite being in a room full of strangers, we shared similar backgrounds, and the weekend was immediately comfortable and fun. It’s the military family that we love and miss, but even better. Every single person in that room shared the same love for the outdoors and adrenaline junky sports. Some are experienced ice climbers and backcountry guides while others are new and ready to learn, me being one of the eager newbies.
On the climbing days, we hiked into the climbing spot and claimed our spot. Experienced climbers grabbed ropes and got after it while the leaders dispersed and starting instructing the new folks on how to climb. VetEx is led by some of the most incredibly talented and patient leaders that are excited to teach their hobbies to anyone that wants to learn. Over the course of the weekend, we all spent a lot of time climbing, sharing stories and having a great time together. Whether people were new or old to the sport, everyone left satisfied, tired ready to hit the hot tubs, and excited for the next VetEx adventure.
In short, I’m hooked. I’ve signed up for many more trips and looking forward to all of the outdoor junky adventures with this group. If you’re a veteran with a great love of the outdoors, Veteran’s Expeditions is likely what you’ve been looking for. I’m so thankful for the experience, the camaraderie, and the inspiration that this group is.
Cheers to weekend full of inspiration, adrenaline, new friends and the promise of many adventures to come. A big thank you to Veteran’s Expeditions.
