Announcing: Green Mountain Hike, 16 April

Date: 10 Apr, 2011  No Comments

Hey Veterans and Friends of VetEx,

We’re excited about this coming Saturday the 16th of April for a casual hike up Green Mountain in Boulder. We will meet at Nick’s house at 7:45am. This is an easy to moderate hike that may have some slippery spots due to some ice on the trail. If you have instep crampons, micro spikes, or any other ice grippers, bring them. If not, do not worry about it, we’ll get you safely to the top of Green! We hope to see you there, please RSVP by contacting Nick at

We also have two more trips coming up in May and June and will announce July and August Trips in June!

Saturday May 21st:  Mountain Bike Boulder Trails (would like this to turn into a regular group ride and add rides in Denver and Co Springs if we can find the leaders)

Saturday June 18th:  Event TBA, what would you like to do?

It has been an exciting 12, now almost 13 months since we first began last March, 2010. We’ve been to the top of mountains, through white water, on climbing trips, stuck to frozen waterfalls, and in Alpine Lakes. We’ve helped clean out the Dinosaur National Monument of invasive species, and reached out to our local communities. We hope to expand our programs in 2011 and moving forward in 2012. It is our goal to have our first paid employee on board by the end of this year, but we can only do that with your help.

As you know, right now, we are an entirely volunteer organization and have been under the careful stewardship of the American Alpine Club. We are hoping this summer to transition out from under their warm wings and stand up as our own separate 501c3 non-profit. Meanwhile, Jordan has started a new job that will limit his ability to serve as the Front Range Chapter president, and Stacy has accepted a position with the Sierra Club in Washington DC to work as their military affairs coordinator. We congratulate Jordan and Stacy on their new accomplishments, and look forward to Stacy opening up our first chapter outside of Colorado sometime this summer.

However, if we are to grow VetEx to the next level, we need your help! Stacy will maintain his close involvement with the organization and Nick will still be in Boulder as our Field Director, but as Stacy and Jordan transition, we need volunteers to help primarily with the following tasks:

–Trip planning and leadership

–Managing our growing social media and web presence

–A database manager

–Partnership coordinators to help ensure we have the strong corporate,   community, foundation, and individual partnerships necessary to grow the organization in Colorado and the Rocky Mountain West

If you, a veteran or military / veteran family member you know are interested in any of these positions, please send a brief one page resume and a short letter to telling us a little bit about yourself. For most of the positions, there is no need to be based in Boulder, but proximity to the Front Range would be a huge help! We assure you the rewards of these positions will be great as you will again be serving your nation and veteran communities!

Again, we want to send out a huge thank you to Chad and Paradox Sports for inviting us to their Ice Climbing event.  Check out this link if you haven’t seen it already:

We will be there next year.  The pictures (here thanks to Lourdes Irizarry) and stories motivate us to no end.  I thought my climbing days of technical ice and rock where long over due to loosing my fingers on my right hand.  These guys are showing me that anyone can climb as long as they are willing to try.

Lastly, the VetEx mountain bike team needs sponsorship and vets to ride in races. We’ve got a few entrances taken care of and a second bike you can ride! Anyone out there who can help me? Contact Nick at!

A huge thanks as well to Justin at Crystal Ski Shop, Jon at Boulder Bikesmith, and Becky at Culinary Connectors for their generous donations.  As always, we look forward to getting outside with you all soon.  If you have not come out with us yet, this is your formal invitation to come join us outside and send the invite around!

See you on the trail or up on the rock!

-Nick and Stacy
